Nipissing Paramedic Services

(North Bay Regional Health Centre, Mattawa General Hospital & Municipality of Temagami)

The District of Nipissing Paramedic Services has paramedic stations located in North Bay (2), West Nipissing (1), Whitney (1), Mattawa (1) and Temagami (1) providing services to a total population of approximately 65,000 people and runs 17,000 calls annually. The service works within the operating guidelines and standards set out by the Ambulance Act and all other governing legislation.

The District of Nipissing Paramedic Services is a 24 hour 7 day a week Basic Life Support & Advance Life Support service that provides high quality pre-hospital patient care to the sick and injured. The minimum paramedic level staffed at all times is Primary Care Paramedic. The District operates with (9) staffed Ambulances during the day (Mon-Fri), (8) Sat – Sun during the day, and (4) Staffed Ambulance, (3) On-Call crews (Mon – Sun) on nights.

The District of Nipissing has established the following District Response Time Plan:

i. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)
The ambulance service will endeavor to have a responder equipped and ready to use an AED at the location of a patient determined to be in SCA within 6 minutes from the time ambulance dispatch conveys the call information to the paramedic 40% percent of the time.

ii. CTAS 1
The ambulance service will endeavour to have a paramedic as defined by the Ambulance Act and duly equipped at the location of a patient determined to be CTAS 1 within 8 minutes from the time ambulance dispatch conveys the call information to the paramedic 70% percent of the time.

iii. CTAS 2, 3, 4, 5
The ambulance service will endeavor to have a paramedic as defined by the Ambulance Act and duly equipped at the location of a patient determined to be CTAS 2, 3, 4, 5 within the amount of time specified in the table below. The percentage of time the target time will be achieved is also specified in the table below.

In addition to the above response times all the services within the District of Nipissing are monitored to ensure following times are being achieved – Notified to Mobile < (2) minutes (on-site crews) and < 10 minutes (call-back crews).

The strength of our service is our people, and our Paramedics are the most valuable resource of our service. Every staff member is committed to providing the highest quality of patient care. This is achieved by Base Hospital and In-house Review and In-service Quality Assurance program.

We recognize that the provision of quality patient care is only possible through the strong relationships that exist with other agencies such as the Central Ambulance Communication Centre (North Bay), North Bay Regional Health Centre, Mattawa General Hospital, Municipality of Temagami, Centre for Pre-hospital Care Program (Base Hospital), Fire Departments, out lying Emergency First Response Teams, the Ontario Provincial Police, West Nipissing Police Service and the North Bay City Police Service. Finally, the relationship with the District of Nipissing Social Services Board and the other ambulance services within our region strengthens our commitment to a higher quality of patient care.
